How it works
Visit during open hours and a staff member will help you complete a quick registration. You’ll need to provide the names and dates of birth for all household members and your rent amount.
Eligible households may receive food assistance once every 30 days.

Who we serve
We provide food assistance directly to residents of the greater Richmond area. Live in Petersburg, Hopewell, Prince George, or Dinwiddie? Call us and we’ll help connect you with food assistance closer to home.
Don’t have access to a kitchen?
We offer smaller, ready-to-eat food kits once a week while supplies last.
Pay Rent
Facing eviction? We may be able to help with past-due rent so you can stay in your home.

Applicants must:
Live in Richmond, Petersburg, Hopewell, Dinwiddie, or Prince George
Be at or below 200% of Federal Poverty Line
Have a pay or quit notice or an active eviction
Owe no more than $800 for a single-person household or $1,500 for a household with a minor on the lease.
Cannot have received assistance in the last year from another organization.
CAPUP will only provide assistance for a household once every 3 years.
If approved, you will be required to attend a financial coaching workshop. These are offered at two different times in the week and the location will alternate between Richmond and the Crater region.

Avoid Utility Shutoff
Get help with an overdue utility bill before your service is disconnected.

Elevate
Elevate is built for working families who want more than short-term relief.

Families will spend 18 months working with a Family Economic Empowerment Coach to set goals, navigate obstacles, and stay focused on what comes next. Families build a household budget, track their progress, and gain weekly access to the food pantry so more of their income can go toward moving forward. Just as important, they join a community of peers who encourage one another and celebrate progress together.
Knowing Money
Financial workshops and one-on-one counseling to help families budget, reduce debt, and plan ahead.

Starting in summer 2026, every household that receives emergency financial assistance is connected to a financial management workshop — a practical session on managing money, setting goals, and making informed decisions. From there, households can work one-on-one with CAPUP’s certified financial counselor to build a budget, tackle debt, and plan their next step.

Eligibility:
Must be resident of Richmond, Petersburg, Prince George, or Dinwiddie.
Parents/caregivers with children under 18 who are employed, or recently employed and seeking employment.
Earn less than 200% of the federal poverty line.
